JCSDA Performance Metrics
These impact statistics are produced operationally by FNMOC from the Naval Research Laboratory's (NRL) Observation Impact Monitoring System (NAVOBS). NAVOBS uses the adjoint versions of the Navy's global 4D variational data assimilation system and global spectral forecast model to monitor observation impact on forecast error. These systems and their adjoints, the NRL Atmospheric Variational Data Assimilation System- Accelerated Representer (NAVDAS-AR) and the Navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System (NOGAPS), were also developed by the Naval Research Laboratory and transitioned to operations at FNMOC.
The following graphics show the impact of each type of observing system on the 24hr global forecast error, using the moist total energy norm (J/kg) as the proxy for observation impact. A negative value implies that the instrument type has a beneficial impact on reducing global forecast error, with the larger magnitude values indicating larger impact.
