Microwave Integrated Retrieval System

Purpose of Study
This system is being developed with an end to end capabability of calibrating and characterizing the radiances measured from satellite microwave instruments, and retrieving the environmental data records with the state-of-the-art algorithm science. The system is tested with the NOAA Polar-orbiting satellite  Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit (AMSU) and Microwave Humidity Sounder (MHS) for the next generation of the microwave sounding product system from NPOESS Preparatory Project (NPP) Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) and NPOESS Conically scanning Microwave Imager and Sounder (CMIS)
Key Benefits
The quality of NOAA POES microwave sounding products will be significantly improved and will be more useful under cloudy and precipitation conditions. The performance for NOAA and future NPOESS operational microwave senors can be better monitored with various on-orbit monitoring and trending analyses. More NOAA unique products will be developed from NPP/NPOESS ATMS. The software and off line codes for instrument monitoring and corrections of instrument anomaly are made available for addressing and assessing NPOESS microwave sensor long-term stability.
