Air Quality Forecast Verification Using GOES AOD Quality Verification

NOAA / NESDIS has demonstrated the usefulness of 30-minute GOES AOD data in verifying air quality forecasts. Using the developmental Community Multi-scale Air Quality (CMAQ) runs made during the summer of 2004 and observations of GOES AODs, NESDIS scientists evaluated the AOD forecasts and reported the findings to Journal of Applied Meteorology. The paper is currently in review. The National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) will soon begin downloading GOES AOD data for ingestion into its forecast verification system.

The figure below shows comparison between GOES AOD (top left) and CMAQ AOD forecast (top right) valid for 17Z forecast on July 21, 2004. Bottom left plot shows the difference between the two and bottom right plot shows frequency distribution of AOD for GOES and CMAQ.
