Air Quality Remote Sensing Program
NPOESS Preparatory Program / National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPP / NPOESS)

artist's rendition of an NPOESS satelliteThe Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) and Visible/Infrared Imager/Radiometer Sensors (VIIRS) to be flown on NPP and NPOESS will provide capabilities to retrieve trace gases and aerosols similar to OMI and MODIS. The experience gained by NASA in retrieving and applying these products for air quality applications will be transitioned to NOAA for operational implementation. NESDIS is partnering with NASA and academia to develop algorithms and application tools for air quality products from these instruments. Additionally, user readiness activities are being carried out using OMI and MODIS data in an operational environment.
