Hank Drahos received a B.S. degree in Mathematics from
Indiana Central University in 1969, and he completed his M.S. in
Meteorology at Purdue University in 1972. He started his NOAA
career as a scientific programmer 1972 in operations. In the mid-70's
he took responsibility for the VTPR sounding system. He and Dr. Weinreb
designed the TOVS processing system in 1976 & 1977. He joined the
team to build test and implement the system in late 1978. He then
became the first sounding PAL in 1980, serving until 1984. He worked
for NCDC from 1984 through 1987 as a branch chief in Suitland. He led
the project to install the Tera Bit memory archive system. He returned
to ORA in 1987 and led the effort to implement the revised DMSP microwave
sounding system. He then became the project manager for the NOAA-K
sounding system. This effort lasted until 1994 when it was passed to
operations. He assumed the team leader/branch chief for the Forecast
Products Development Team in 1998.
