Marco Vargas photoMarco Vargas received a B.E. degree in Electrical Engineering in 2002, an M.S. in 2004, and a PhD in Electrical Engineering in 2007, specializing in remote sensing, all from the City University of New York. He joined NOAA/NESDIS in 2006 through the NOAA Graduate Sciences Program.

Dr. Vargas' research interests include satellite remote sensing of vegetation, monitoring vegetation condition, satellite remote sensing of ocean waters, ocean color algorithms, atmospheric correction, and retrieval of bio-optical parameters from satellite data.

Marco is currently working in the improvement of global vegetation data sets from AVHRR. His tasks include improvement of the data in post- volcanoes period, data adjustment for sensor degradation and satellites orbital drift, re-analysis, re-calculation and validation of climatology. Dr Vargas is also working in the development of a technique to document phenology of phytoplankton biomass from satellite ocean color observations.

Recent Presentations

Improvement of NDVI time series using a statistical technique to reduce the negative effect on NDVI caused by the volcanic eruptions of El Chichon (1982) and Mount Pinatubo (1991). Presented at the CEOS-NOAA Workshop on AVHRR plus HIRS Climate Data Records, November 17-19, 2008, Camp Springs, MD.

Phytoplankton Phenology from Satellite Ocean Color Observations. Presented at the 2008 Ocean Sciences Meeting in Orlando, Florida on March 06, 2008.
