Operational Products Development Branch
Research Scientist
Roger Weldon received an M.S. degree in meteorology
from Penn State University in 1969. During 11 years in the Air Force
Air Weather Service, Roger served as an aviation weather forecaster,
a weather station commander, and director of advanced fcourses at the
Chanute Weather Training Center. He joined NESDIS in 1972 where he
developed applications of satellite imagery to weather forecasting
and analysis.
Roger concentrated on the applications in synoptic scale weather
systems, with emphasis on mid latitude cyclogenesis, storm evolution, and
jet stream meteorology. Research knowledge was distributed by
presenting numerous training courses to forecasters from the National
Weather Service, the military weather services, and to international
weather agencies. Presently, Roger is conducting a research study
relating changes in tropical cyclone behavior to changes in the upper air
environment, with emphasis on the use of water vapor imagery.
