Yunyue Yu photoYunyue Yu received the Ph.D. degree in Aerospace Engineering Sciences from the University of Colorado (CU) in 1996. He also possesses a BSc. degree in Physics from the Ocean University of Qingdao (OUQ), China (1982), and a diploma of MSc.-equivalent in Advanced Physics from the Peking University, China (1986).

During his tenure with Ocean University of Qingdao (1982-1993), he served as lecturer, and associate professor, and held leadership roles in multiple international corporation projects. From 1987 to 1993, he was a visiting scientist at University of Dundee (UK), Division of Atmospheric Research, Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Research Organization (CSIRO), and Colorado Center for Astrodynamics Research, University of Colorado (CU). In 1996 he joined the Earth Observation System Satellites program through Raytheon ITSS and George Mason University, and worked at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). Currently Dr. Yu serves as a physical scientist at NOAA/NESDIS Center for Satellite Applications and Research, chairman of the Land Surface Algorithm Working Group of GOES-R satellite mission, and member of the NPOESS VIIRS Operational Algorithm Team.

Dr. Yu has accomplished a variety of projects in ocean and land surface remote sensing and applications. From 1987 to 1994, he focused on satellite sea surface temperature (SST) retrieval and applications, and developed two SST algorithms. He applied the SST data, as well as altimeter data, in his Pacific Warm Pool Variation study and Global SST Pattern analysis. From 1996 to 2000 he was involved in developing earth observation systems for ocean products. He developed several methods for computing and demonstrating ocean remote sensing products using advanced IT techniques. In particular, a video tape was produced and distributed at NASA which demonstrates global ocean current patterns using particle-track technique; several art works of global SST and ocean current patterns were used by the National Geographic Program.

In 2002, Dr. Yu 'landed' and focused on satellite land surface remote sensing research and applications, through the National Polar- orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) program. He was in charge of algorithm development for land surface albedo product from the Visible and Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), and was the leading author of the VIIRS albedo Algorithm Theoretical Bases Document (2004). From 2006 he has been in charge of the algorithm development for land surface temperature product from the GOES-R Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI). He has served as Land Team chair of the GOES-R Algorithm Working Group (AWG) since 2007, for developing all the GOES-R land surface products including LST, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Active Fire/Hot Spot Characterization, Albedo, Flood/Standing Water, and Green Vegetation Fraction. Also, he is the VIIRS land product calibration and validation team member, leading validation activities for land surface temperature product.
