Finite Volume Cubed Sphere (FV3)

Description:
This tutorial will give a description of the motivation, design, algorithms, and structure of the FV3 dynamical core. Foundational concepts, such as finite-volume thinking, the Lagrangian vertical coordinate, and physics-dynamics coupling, will be discussed. Configuration and initialization of FV3 and FV3-powered models for different applications are also presented. This tutorial will also give a tour of the vast community of FV3-based models, introduce frontier applications of FV3, and close with a discussion of the current development of the core and the models using it.

About the Tutorials

Tutorials willl take place from 2-4 PM on both September 10 and 11. Location and finalized list of tutorials will be determined after August 8, 2018.

The Tutorial sessions at the NOAA General Modeling Meeting and Fair provide an opportunity for modeling experts to increase awareness and connections across the NOAA modeling enterprise at a more technical level.

The detailed session format will vary by tutorial topic, but in general will focus on more technical overview of models and their current or future approaches to interface and coupling with other models in a unified framework. The sessions may also include technical, hands-on training.

The expected outcome is to motivate modelers towards thinking about how their models can benefit, and benefit from, other modeling efforts in NOAA, to promote broader NOAA model/model data utilization in novel applications, and to take action toward building a unified modeling enterprise of enhanced utility.

Tutorial Sign-up

Sign-up for the tutorials is done through the registration page. The deadline for initial sign-up is August 8, 2018. Interested attendees should select their top two topics from each tutorial category. Please note due to logistical constraints, not all Tutorial topics will be offered.

Tutorial registration will be confirmed by September 7. If your topic(s) of choice is (are) not selected an alternative will be made for you
