MSG/SEVIRI -- Cloud Mask

There is a strong team for cloud mask (CM) in GOESR project. We would like to use the formal product of cloud mask developed by the cloud team. They are working on that. So far, there is no cloud mask product available for MSG images from 2005 to 2008.

MSG_cm_RGB_20083001430_FD_CloudMask.png A simplified version of cloud mask algorithm was developed based on the MODIS and AVHRR experience. Reflectance of band 1 and 2, brightness temperature of band 9 was used.

Cloud mask (CM) data files were created for every day-time half hourly SEVIRI image from 01/01/2005 to present(2008). The image on the right is an example of CM result for a particular MSG/SEVIRI observation. It is for NDVI related research only, and will be used temporary until the formal CM product is available.

As we know, this CM algorithm is not perfect yet. It tends to over estimate cloud, especially over desert. This is good for screening out cloud pixels for NDVI investigation. Please contact us if you have any question.
