Deployment Events
THU 13-JAN-2005 (013) - MOBY started having problems dialing in. Ray checked the MOBY SGI and modem
and found no problems. Mark had me look though the FORTH LOG files and it seems MOBY
is attempting to dialin and starting and stopping correctly. So we just wait and see
and hope it is a cellular problem. The only file received since 13 Jan is one file on 15 Jan.

Sunday I noticed there were no downloads for 1/13 and 1/14, only one on 1/15, and none on 1/16.
I was at the Lab during yesterdays (Monday) download time to see if the problem was on our end.
It appeared that MOBY dialed in at the appropriate time, but dropped the connection during the
initial modem handshaking. Approximately 2 minutes later there was another attempt to dial in
and again, the same results.
We know the modem is working properly because I am able to dial in, logon, then logoff and end the session in the usual way.
This seems to be a problem on the MOBY end.

Aloha Mare,
Terry and I attempted a trip to MOBY on 13 Jan. (we flew to Maui on the 12th). The weather had
changed the evening we arrived, turning to strong Southwest Kona winds. We were unable to make it
to the buoy site after rounding the north point of Lanai due to heavy swell and wind waves.
We returned to Honolulu that evening as the high pressure ridge had firmly shifted to the south and
the weather was not going to change back to variable winds for some days. Steve and Dan returned to
MOBY and performed the diver cleaning of the buoy on 20 Jan. All looked well with the MOBY.

Thanks for the info. It looks like the current MOBY comms problem is with the Verizon cell system. The buoy
seems to be cycling properly so we should still be collecting data. Verizon is in the middle of a system
upgrade that my be done by 1 Feb. Maybe things will start working again. Let me know if you get any files.

I finally got in touch with a helpfull engineer at Verizon that identified some problems with
the network setup for our cell phone numbers. He says the changes he made may make things
work again. Let me know tommorrow if the MOBY was able to transmit.

Steph,
Did some additional modem testing Sunday using a MOBY simulation script,
running under Linux. The tests were all successful.
I see that we got a 23 file download tonight. The file size looks normal and the
time to complete the download looks normal for a .mob file and a large forth.log.
If we get 2 more .mob and forth.log file sets tomorrow, then I reckon Verizon was
the problem and the problem is fixed.

THU 03-MAR-2005 (062) - Final notes on all the missing MOBY data. During the Mar 2005 MOBY deployment cruise
Mark found that their cell phones were not properly out at the MOBY site, when he
set his cell phone to roam and it used AT&T it worked. So Mark changed the MOBY modem
configuration to roam and the MOBY230 buoy started dialing in 100%, problem solved.
After 12 Jan 2005 we received only 4 files (05011520.MOB, 05012120.MOB, 05021620.MOB and 05013123.MOB).
