NESDIS and India's Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES)
Sign Agreement on INSAT-3D Satellite Data
Mary Kicza & Dr. Ajit Tyagi of MoES Sign the
INSAT-3D Satellite Data Implementing Arrangement
6 October 2010 - NOAA Assistant Administrator for
Satellite and Information Services Mary Kicza and Dr. Ajit Tyagi,
director general of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) of the
Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) recently signed an agreement regarding
collaboration in the use and development of INSAT-3D satellite data.
Mary Kicza and Dr. Tyagi signed this Implementing Arrangement (IA) on 6
October 2010 at NOAA Headquarters in Silver Spring, MD. The agreement
provides a framework for collaboration between MoES and NESDIS
concerning the provision of technical and scientific co-operation
related to INSAT-3D (Imager and Sounder similar to NOAA GOES) satellite
data applications.
The INSAT-3D Imager and Sounder Satellite
With launch scheduled for December 2010, INSAT-3D is a pure
meteorological satellite without additional communications payload, as
in the other INSAT satellites. It features a 19-channel sounder, a 6-
channel imager and a DRT & SAR payload.
Key areas of collaboration
The implementing arrangement states the intent to cooperate in the development
of scientific algorithms/products for INSAT-3D for data products including:
- Data products:
- Sea surface temperature retrieval;
- Satellite rainfall retrieval;
- Vegetation indices;
- clouds classification;
- cloud motion vector (both visible and infrared);
- water vapor winds;
- Vertical profiles of temperature, humidity, and ozone;
- Algorithms for determining the intensity and position of tropical cyclones;
- Cal/val support
STAR scientist Shobha Kondragunta is the NESDIS technical Point of
Contact (POC) for this agreement.
