Ice Surface Temperature

Team Lead: Jeff Key

Product Description

IST is the radiating, or "skin", temperature at the ice surface. It includes the aggregate temperature of objects comprising the ice surface, including snow and melt water on the ice.

The IST algorithm is based on heritage AVHRR & MODIS IST algorithms (Key and Haefliger (1992) and Key et al. (1997)). The baseline split window algorithm uses calibrated TOA brightness temperatures in VIIRS bands M15 & M16.

The JPSS VIIRS Ice Surface Temperature Product will be produced for each VIIRS image and will provide values over all water surfaces of the globe:

  • Clear sky, ice pixels only
  • Daytime and nighttime
